Generell information
The Alexander von Humboldt is 100 years old but she still cruises the oceans as a windjammer.
Originally she was anchored in alternating positions in the North Sea and the Baltic as the manned lightship Reserve Sonderburg therefore as a mobile lighthouse. The hull of the Sonderburg was built in the shape of an elegant, slender sailing ship. As a lightship lying at anchor she also had to withstand the worst weather conditions without any damage, this type of construction was best suited.

After the ship was taken off duty in the middle of the eighties, two captains had the idea of converting the lightship into a windjammer because of her special S-shaped rib construction.

The minds behind this plan were Captain Manfred Hvener, at that time professor at the Technical University of Bremerhaven, and Hans Freiherr von Stackelberg, retired ship-of-the-line captain and former commander of the Gorch Fock. Both are members of the Sail Training Association Germany.

In 1986 the STAG bought the lightship from the German Federal Ministry of Transport with the aim of using it as a sailing training ship for young people. For this purpose the ship had to be converted into a bark. A bark has three masts, whereby two of the masts are square rigged. As a reference to the famous sailing ships of the Rickmers shipping company, the hull was always painted green. The green sails of the ship perpetuate this impression and are also the idea of the Beck & Co. brewery.

The brewery uses the bark as an optical logo for its international advertising campaigns for the Becks brand. In the first instance this has contributed towards making the Alexander von Humboldt one of the worlds most famous German sailing training ships, next to the Gorch Fock.

Since 1986 the Alexander von Humboldt has sailed more than 360,000 sea miles and has had over 35,000 sailors on board.
